I wanted to share a new video with you, called The Story of Cosmetics, a seven-minute film exposing the ugly truth about personal care products. It was produced by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (of which Friends of the Earth is a founding member), Annie Leonard’s Story of Stuff Project and Free Range Studios.
The average woman uses 12 personal care products daily and the average man uses 6. Sunscreens, baby shampoo, lipsticks, and deodorants line our bathroom walls. Yet, less than 20 percent of the chemicals in our cosmetics have been tested for safety by the industry’s safety panel, meaning that we don’t know what our products do to us when we use them.
For the first time in 70 years, we have a real chance to pass a bill that would eliminate chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems from the products women, men and children put on their bodies every day. This bill also includes important provisions for the use of manufactured nanomaterials in cosmetics and personal care products.1
Taking care of our bodies shouldn’t put our health at risk. I hope you watch and share The Story of Cosmetics with your family and friends. And thanks in advance for asking Congress to get behind safe cosmetics legislation. Together, we’re going to make sure that the personal products we use daily will not harm our health or the environment.
